Location database

Introduction

Omega maintains a list of all locations recorded in each card index. These locations are listed in the place name index .

The place name database is a separate, independent, additional database from this list. Each entry in this place name database contains the following fields:

Field Contents
name Unique name of the place
GOV-ID Location identifier in GOV
Coordinates Longitude and latitude coordinates of the location on Earth
abbreviation Abbreviation for the location

For each location in a card index, Omega searches for a corresponding location in the place name database. Therefore, the place names in the card index and in the place name database must be unique and identical. Different places with the same name must be distinguished in the card index and in the place name database by additional information (example: Neunkirchen and Neunkirchen/Nahe ).

Each card index has its own location database. It is planned that in later versions several card indexes will share a location database or that records will be transferable from one location database to another.

Note: Please be aware that we are therefore dealing with a total of three independent databases:

  1. the locations recorded in the file,
  2. the separate location database, and
  3. the GOV .
The first two are linked via the place name and the last two via the GOV ID.

restrictions

The location database can only be used in the preview version of Omega integrated into the AGS Navigator map viewer . In particular, its use in analyses is not yet possible.

operation
